An industrial computer is a special type of computing system engineered to manage a variety of factory and industrial computing functions.  These types of systems often get exposed to shocks, vibrations, extreme temperatures, dusty/humid surroundings, and hazardous environments.

They are used in manufacturing and industrial automation, security and surveillance, underground mining, maritime systems, military, testing equipment, vehicles, kiosks and others. Industrial computing systems are built with a rugged design that can withstand extreme temperatures, vibration, voltage spikes, dust and water, and EMI.  They utilize a fan-less cooling technology and cable-less connections to eliminate moving parts inside the system.  In addition, they are built to resist to some level of dust and water intrusion. In general, the rugged design of the chassis and industrial strength components allow industrial computing system to have significantly longer life cycles than commercial grade systems.

High-performance computing (HPC) is the ability to process data and perform complex calculations at high speeds. To put it into perspective, desktop with a 3 GHz processor can perform around 3 billion calculations per second. While that is much faster than any human can achieve, it pales in comparison to HPC solutions that can perform quadrillions (million billion) of calculations per second.
